Signing of Mauro Furtado
Girona has signed young Portuguese centre Mauro Furtado, 18, from Benfica, on a contract until 2031. The player, Ballon Bronze winner at the last U-17 World Cup, will join the Montilivi squad after Girona’s 2-1 loss to Córdoba.
Player profile
The club emphasises that Furtado is a centre-back with “a huge growth margin and a strong future projection”. He has stood out from a young age for his physical attributes, competitive maturity and leadership ability. His defensive solidity, positioning, anticipation of opponents and quality in ball distribution are highlighted strengths.
International experience
During the last season, Furtado played six matches with Benfica’s U-23 side. With Portugal’s U-17 team, he became world champion, won the Ballon Bronze and was named best player in both the semi-finals and the final.
Girona’s context
The signing comes at a time when Girona, having earned only one point in the first two matches, needs reinforcement to strengthen its promotion bid. Furtado is the club’s sixth signing of the season.
